Our yorkie barks all the time my daughter is around. He also follows her everywhere so we bought him a crate. He can't stay in there all the time obviously but he's keeping us all awake for hours at night. We give him a treat everytime we put him in the crate. How can we one make him stop the barking?
Another thing he loves going to the bathroom in the house. You can put him out for a half hour but it makes no difference. How can we stop him from going to the bathroom is the house?
I really need to stop these habits he has.
Hi Jillian I'm not sure how old your Yorkie is but I'm assuming he's a puppy, I also don't know how long you've had him but again am assuming not too long!
Barking is a normal canine behavior, and puppies use it the way babies use crying - to get attention and have someone take care of them. Of course, just because it's natural that doesn't mean that he can keep doing it, but it shows how understandable it is for him to do this.
You'll need to be very firm with him and ignore the barking when he has to be crated, it won't be easy and some pups can be very stubborn about it... but you need to be more stubborn! Never take him out of the crate because (or while) he's barking, wait for even 20 seconds of silence and reward that instead. You may need earplugs and lose a few nights sleep, but you need to stand firm otherwise he could keep this up indefinitely. If you reward him even once by taking him out of his crate or paying him attention because he's complaining, he'll bark and cry for even longer next time as he expects the same result.
As for the housebreaking, puppies have no idea that we expect them to eliminate in a particular spot until we teach them about it, and teach them effectively. The most effective method of housebreaking is to use a crate as making sure the pup has no opportunity to 'make a mistake' indoors is the key. Use a crate, and supervise when he's not crated. Period.
I'd recommend that you read my Crate Training A Puppy as it has all the tips and advice you need, and it also covers excessive barking when crated.
Hope this helps, best of luck with your little one.
