can i still train my 11 month old staffordshire bull terrier?
i try to walk him off his lead and he always just runs away from me and it will take me at east 30 minutes to get him back .
Hi Tracey It's perfectly possible to train an 11 month old pup, but it may take a bit longer than it would with a younger puppy. That's because you often need to re-train them out of old, bad habits as well as train them up in the new, correct habits.
I wouldn't ever suggest letting your pup off leash until you're absolutely certain that his recall is bullet-proof! For his own safety, you need to know that he will come when called without even having to think about it.
To get to that point you need to practice the recall, over and over again and never call him without being sure he doesn't have a chance to ignore you. You need to practice with him on a long training leash or rope, so that if he doesn't come, you can tug him in. And always treat and praise him when he gets to you.
I would recommend enrolling him in an obedience class right away, it will help you both and is a great socialization experience for him.
Staffys are wonderful dogs, but do tend to be dog aggressive when adult, so don't let him off-leash around other dogs.
