Hi, We just got a new 8 week old puppy and we already have a 7 month puppy.
The 7 month old puppy (Munchkin)is rough housing the new puppy. He won't leave him alone and he treats him as if he was a toy and nibbles on him.
Is this normal? and what should we do?
Hi Sara Yes, this is pretty normal. Older/bigger puppies (and adult dogs) can be a bit rough with a small pup, but they generally don't hurt them. And it doesn't sound as though Munchkin is being aggressive, just a bit 'bossy'.
Unless you're seriously concerned that the puppy will be injured, it's best just to leave them to sort out their relationship by themselves. It often takes a few weeks for them to come to a comfortable 'balance', and Munchkin will be trying to make sure the new guy knows who's the 'Alpha Dog' in your home.
It's generally advised that when adding a new dog to the family, that it be of the opposite sex to the existing dog. This helps to prevent squabbling and fighting when the pup matures. Two adult dogs of the same sex may be combative. However, as you already have both your dogs, just be sure that they both get neutered and that you always have plenty of toys and treats to go around. You may also find feeding them separately, at least when they're mature, works best.
