Our 14 week old puppy has slept in the laundry since being with us (2 weeks) he is nearly sleeping through the night - sometimes wakes once when a quick trip outside to go to the toilet is required - then he will sleep again until morning.
We would like him to be an outside sleeping dog. How would be the best way to make the change and train him to the new sleeping place.
Hi David Firstly, make sure that the weather isn't too hot, too cold, or too wet and that he has a safe and comfy place to sleep outdoors. He's still a young puppy and it would be better for him to be inside at night, however if you must put him outside it's important that he's safe, warm and comfortable. A sturdy, insulated dog house and a fenced yard are vital.
As for HOW to make the change, I'd expect a few nights of crying and barking to begin with as he will probably be a bit scared, and lonely, outdoors at night. Make sure he's familiar with his dog house, and the area where he is sleeping and try leaving him there for a couple of hours during the day for a week or so before leaving him at night.
If you can give him some of his sturdy chew toys (ones that he likes and knows well), that will help him feel more 'at home'. It will be a learning curve for him but he should settle down and accept that he now sleeps outdoors within a few weeks.
It's vital that you spend lots of one-on-one time with him during the day, indoors and out, so that he doesn't feel isolated and alone and maintains his human interaction and socialization.
