My Havamalt is so smart. She sits, stays and comes when I call her. She is almost 10 weeks old.
She comes when called but backs away when my hand reaches for her. She is so lovable, friendly and sociable. What should I do?
Hi Mark For only 10 weeks old your puppy is doing extremely well, great job!
It's absolutely normal for a pup to shy away, scoot backwards, or duck her head when you reach for her once she's come to you. When practicing the 'come' command I'd recommend doing this....
Call her to you, and when she gets to you ask her to sit right in front of you and facing you. Then reach out slowly under her chin and take hold of her collar. Once you have done that, tell her 'good come' and immediately give her a treat and praise. Do it this way every time and she will come to realize that she needs to sit and let you reach for her collar before she gets her treat... and she'll stop backing away.
Often puppies will instinctively duck, or back off if you reach over their heads, instead reach out under their chins - for petting, or to get a hold of their collar. It's less threatening that way.
Also, NEVER call your puppy to you and then scold or punish them for something they've done wrong - they can't associate the scolding with anything other than whatever they did immediately preceding it - in this case coming to you. SO, they think that they've done something wrong by obeying you and next time they come (IF they come) they'll be nervous and skittish.
I think you're doing just fine for now so keep up the good work and by using the tips above you should be able to eliminate this problem.
