I have a 5 month old english bulldog puppy who recently started pooping and peeing in his cage overnight.
we take food and water away at 5 pm and he is still doing it.. HELP
Hi Staci It's a bit strange that your pup would start to do this if he's been clean in his crate up to now. Any sort of change in behavior like this needs evaluation and I'd recommend making sure your pup has had a full check up from your vet to rule out any underlying health issue.
Things like this can happen if a pup is under stress or is anxious about something. For example, if you've added a new dog (or cat/other pet) to the family recently, moved house, had a baby, got married/divorced, been seriously ill etc. etc. Dogs are very intuitive and pick up on emotions without understanding them, and if they feel anxious they often regress in their training.
Also, make sure his crate isn't too big. Sometimes it's necessary to buy the next-size crate if your pup has grown out of his current one. But don't make the mistake of buying one for him to 'grow into' as it may not be effective in terms of housebreaking issues.
If there have been any changes in his diet, routine, exercise habits etc. that could also factor in. It's pretty much a bit of 'detective work' that's required to try and find out what's causing him to behave this way. Meantime, I'd recommend going backwards a bit yourselves, and take him out more often and limit the time he spends in his crate - the way you did when he was younger.
This may just be a developmental 'hiccup' and he will soon be back to his good habits. For more information on crate training, check out my Crate Training A Puppy page.
