We have a 6 month old Morkie who sleeps with us. He wakes up about 1:30 each morning and needs to go out.
Once he has gone out and done his thing he doesn't want to go back to sleep ... he wants to play.
Needless to say we need sleep. Any ideas? Thank you, Tired and Sleepy
Hi Puppies are creatures of habit, and it sounds as though your little guy has simply got into the habit of waking up in the night, and expecting an impromptu play session!
At 6 months old he really shouldn't still need a night-time potty break, and he definitely doesn't need to be entertained.
I wouldn't just stop taking him outside when he wakes up for now, but DO NOT give him any encouragement at all by giving him attention. Don't make eye contact with him, don't talk to him (apart from the basic 'potty' command you use and some quiet praise when he performs), and keep lights low etc.
As soon as he's done his business go right back to bed and totally ignore him, no matter how persistent he may be. If you do this consistently every night he will eventually understand and once he stops being rewarded by getting your attention he'll likely stop his nocturnal habits.
However, you will need to be very patient and consistent and don't expect quick results, it could take a couple of weeks (or longer) for him to 'forget' this annoying habit. Don't give in even once though, or you'll take yourself right back to square one.
