i have a 2 1/2 month old miniature rat terrier. he does real good about going potty outside. i put down a pad for him to use when i can't take him out side. he will pee on the pad if he can't hold it but will not poop on the pad.
are puppy pads a bad idea and if they are what do i do when i can't take him out? please help me.
Hi For his age, it sounds as though your little guy is doing very well so far.
I don't recommend puppy pads as they tend to confuse the pup, and can make housebreaking take longer than necessary.
Rather than use a pad, I'd strongly recommend that you get him a crate and start crate training him. It eliminates most of the opportunities for him to 'make a mistake' indoors and so speeds up the training process.
As he's a small breed pup, and only 2 months old, he won't be able to hold it for more than a couple of hours maximum. When he's not crated, he will need a potty break every 30 mins or so during the daytime, and maybe one or two at night. Of course, all puppies are different and some can go longer than this, others shorter, it depends.
