We have a 3 yr old lab, 5wks ago we brought a 9am old lab. the problem is the puppy will not stop pestering the older dog, she keeps nipping at her face & mouth, now our older dog is moulting like mad.
Could our older dog be losing her coat due to stress from this and if so what can we do about the problem, they are both Labrador bitches.
Hi Diane This is very normal behavior, whenever a new pup is brought into a home with a resident, older, dog there is some 'jostling' and it takes time for them to adjust to each other.
Generally puppies can be a bit of a nuisance to the older dog, but most will let the pup know when he/she has 'crossed the line' with a growl or even a snap. That's normal too.
It's best to let the two of them sort it out by themselves as much as possible, only getting involved if one or the other is really in danger of getting hurt or distressed. Things will settle down faster that way. You can read more about all this on my Introducing A New Puppy page.
Usually it's better to add a pup of the opposite sex from the resident dog as it will reduce the chances of fights/aggression between them later on as the pup matures. However, if one (or both) of them have fairly submissive temperaments then hopefully this will work out without too much trouble.
