My 4 1/2 month old maltipoo puppy bites constantly, you can not even play with her because of the constant biting and growling.
We are her first owners and show her lots of love and attention and she still wants to tear us apart!
Hi As frustrating, worrying (and painful!) as this can be, rest assured that it's a perfectly normal puppy behavior.
Of course, although it's normal canine behavior, that doesn't mean that it's acceptable to a puppy's human family.
Biting, nipping and mouthing is usually an attention-seeking behavior, and sometimes a dominance issue. With your pup it may be a little of both.
Start by withdrawing your attention every time your pup starts to bite you. Stop playing, petting, whatever it is that you're doing, cross your arms and avoid eye contact with your puppy. Basically ignore her. You can even walk away or leave the room if she continues to bite or growl at you.
Do this EVERY TIME she starts to nip and bite. Puppies are creatures of habit and need to learn through association. If you are consistent, she will soon learn that biting=being ignored, and she won't like that.
Some puppies (and some breeds) are more prone to biting and more stubborn than others. If after at least two weeks of the above measures, she's not showing improvement there are some other tactics you can use.
You can find out about these and learn more about dealing with this behavior on my Puppy Biting page.
