My 3 month old lab puppy for some reason out of the blue will come up and bite me really hard, not enough to break the skin, but enough to really bruise me.
I have tried yelping, NO bite, redirecting her with a toy, getting up and ignoring but any type of discipline only makes her come after me more and she will also bark at me.
What do I do?
Hi Dan It sounds as though your pup may be using this biting behavior as an attempt to dominate you, rather than simply trying to get attention.
This isn't terribly unusual but it does need to be stopped. As you've tried the obvious methods already, I suggest that you try using the spray-bottle method and you can learn about this on my Puppy Biting page.
I'd also recommend that you make sure your pup is submissive to you in all aspects of his daily routine. He should go through doorways after you do, never get up on beds/furniture (a higher position is seen as a position of authority), and have to 'sit' before getting his food, treats, walks etc. When you teach this early it helps to head off any true domination attempts in adolescence.
As he should already have had all his puppy shots, I'd recommend that you also enroll him in a basic obedience class at a local dog obedience school That will help you communicate better with him and a professional trainer can help you with any issues that arise.
