I have a 14 week old JRT x Westie and am wondering about his behaviour.
He's brilliant for toileting when we are in, but he is on his own for a 5 hour period from 11 till 5 when our Neighbour comes home and lets him out and he's always messed in the kitchen.
At first he screamed the house down when we left, but he's not making a noise when my partner leaves now, however today my mum went round at lunch because my dog sitter is ill an let him out.
He then proceeded to bark the house down when she left.
I ask my dog sitter if he is barking when she gets to him at night and she normally says no. He also takes himself to the garden and will happily spend time there without us. Yet on Saturday evening when we left him for a few hours, she went round and he was barking then.
I've had no complaints, but I am wondering if he has SA or is he just being a typical pup that will grow out of it?
Hi Katie From what you've told me it sounds as though your pup is behaving pretty normally for a 14 week old, and it doesn't sound as though he's suffering from separation anxiety.
At this age it is to be expected that he will eliminate indoors if he's left for 5 hours. You may find he will 'hold it' if you use a crate for him (see my Crate Training A Puppy page for more on this).
As he grows, matures and becomes more self-confident and more able to control his bladder and bowels for longer periods I think you'll find these issues will diminish and eventually disappear.
