Puppy barking at me whenever I eat ...
My 12 week old lab pup barks at me non-stop when I'm eating , I have tried to hold his snout and say bad boy but that doesn't work and putting him in his crate I feel would only make him associate the crate with punishment ...
He is really young but this is clearly not behavior that would be considered acceptable as he matures ...
Any helpful hints , suggestions , am I doing something wrong ?
Thanks sincerely ,
I doubt you're doing anything wrong here, it's simply that your puppy wants his opinion to be heard and he seems to be upset when you're eating and he isn't.
Dogs are pack animals, and within the pack the 'alpha' dogs eat first, with the others waiting for 'left-overs'. You're the alpha in your household so it's important that your puppy realizes that he needs to wait, so don't give in to his demands.
If your nerves can take it, simply tell him 'NO' and hold his muzzle closed for a few seconds once, then ignore him if he continues to bark. Don't talk to him, make eye contact, or communicate in any way... simply freeze him out. It will be a battle of wills, and may take several mealtimes before you notice any improvement, but if this behavior isn't reinforced with attention (and even negative attention is attention in his eyes) he will eventually stop.
If you find that impossible, just put him in his crate (in this sort of situation that's okay) or put him in another room and ignore his complaints. He will eventually stop making a fuss, but the first method is likely to teach him the best lesson.
Hope this helps. Best of luck with your pup.
