my german shepherd bites feet and legs, we have lot soft toys etc. after he eats he is ok for a while.
Also we are gone from morning to 6pm, he urinates and poops in basement which we set up for him. when we are home he tends to go in basement and poops he seems confused by not letting us know he has to go. Before we put him in basement he would let us know he had to go .
can you please offer some direction.
Hi Rich Biting and nipping is normal puppy behavior and german shepherds can be quite mouthy. Check out my Puppy Biting page for lots of tips and advice on dealing with this behavior.
Your pup is confused about where he is supposed to eliminate, and that's not surprising as you seem to be expecting him to go in the basement during the daytime, but not when you're home. That is too complicated for him to understand!
As far as he's concerned, you have literally 'told' him to use the basement, so he thinks he is doing the right thing. If you tell him off or punish him he will be even more confused which will make things worse.
The best thing to do is to get a crate and start crating training him, and teach him that he needs to go outside to pee/poop. He is too young to leave all day in a crate though, so you will need to come home at lunchtime (or find someone who can come to your home) to let him outside to do his business and get some exercise. He's still very young and it's important to get him into the right habits now.
Remember, your pup is still a baby and he needs you to show him what the right behavior is with loving discipline and rewards for good behavior. He's not been born knowing what humans expect of him and you are the teachers. Best of luck with your pup.
