My 9 month border terrier whines for most of the time when i take her out for a walk. Been going on for months now.
Thought she would eventually stop as her confidence builds but she almost seems to be getting worse! I never get angry or shout at her as i know it wouldn't help, but i have to find a way to help her. Any ideas?
Hi Colin This is unusual in my experience, because although a young puppy may resist the leash at first or not be too happy to follow along on walks, generally once they get used to it they really enjoy this activity.
I'd first suggest that you have your veterinarian give her a thorough check up to make sure that there isn't any physical reason for her whining (eg. joint problems, 'growing pains' etc.). You never know.
If she gets a clean bill of health, then you may want to consider enrolling her in a dog obedience class and getting some 'hands on' help from a professional dog trainer. If her whining is purely due to anxiety, then the added socialization and discipline of formal training may help her to feel more confident.
Or perhaps she's whining because she's so excited? If she spends all day indoors or alone, her walk could be the highlight of her day and she is vocalizing to express that? If that's the case then perhaps exercising her in the back yard or playing a few games before the walk would help 'take the edge off'?
I'm sorry I can't help more with this as I'm not certain what's causing her to behave like this, but I think if you seek help from a vet and a dog trainer you should be able to get some answers. Then walks can become more enjoyable for you both.
