I have a 4 month old dachshund and he has been doing great, except for the past two days. He was able to jump over our little gate and roam the house while I was at work. So while at work, he rips up the carpet, and I have put him in the kennel for doing so.
Now, I have moved his kennel that he sleeps in at night, so the past two nights he has been barking non-stop. Normally, he gets in his kennel and goes right to sleep. I'm wondering if he is barking b/c he's in a new place and/or b/c I used his kennel as a punishment. any thoughts?
Hi Michelle I'd guess it's the recent changes in his routine that are causing him to feel unsettled and to bark more. Puppies are creatures of habit and they get their security from familiarity and routine.
When one of my pups decided that jumping the baby gate was the key to his freedom I bought another gate and just put one above the other in the doorway - it worked perfectly. If he's pretty good about his housetraining, this may be a better idea for you than crating him all day. It's best not to use the crate as a punishment, but I doubt this is your problem right now.
If you think the new position of his crate is the best one, just continue to put him in there at night and ignore his complaints. He will adjust to it and will learn this new 'habit'.
