my new shih tzu messes everywhere how can i train him to go in one place until i can take him out?
i have recently bought a male shih tzu he is eleven weeks old and messes everywhere.
i have bought a training patch and some area spray but he still does not understand and messes everywhere. does any one have any tips?
Your puppy is a tiny baby and he simply doesn't understand what you want from him. Puppies are born thinking everywhere is 'fair game' in terms of their elimination (other than the tiny area where they sleep), it takes time and patience to help them learn that we humans have another viewpoint!
I can only recommend that you read my Potty Train A Puppy page thoroughly and follow it's advice. Also, you need to purchase a crate and use the Crate Training A Puppy method and advice.
It takes weeks, usually months, to potty train a pup successfully, although of course the number of 'accidents' should go down quite quickly once you get into a routine with the crate. As a general rule, a pup that's been properly and consistently trained should be fairly reliable by about 6 months old.
I would also recommend that you use a doggie litterbox or one of the portable dog potties (you'll find info. about these on my potty training page). They usually work much better than pee pee pads, and clean up any areas where he's had accidents using an enzymatic cleaner such as the ones you can find on my Dog Urine Cleaning Products page.
Patience and consistency are the keys, so make sure you follow all the advice I have on my site about housebreaking and stay calm and focused. Your little guy will 'get it' eventually.
Hope this helps, best of luck with your new pup.
