My 17 week old lab pup pees in house between 1-3 times/day. Help
My puppy is let out MANY times during the day and we have even started offering her a treat along with our praise when she does pee outside- to encourage her. But after all of this, she still pees inside. I do find when she leaves our sight, that's when she does it. Not all the time, but most.
I am even at the point now where I think i should keep her on her leash when she is with us (in the living room)so i can control where she is at all times. Instead if having to locate her or raise my voice for her to come back. Is this a good idea?
Hi Denise Puppies don't naturally realize that outdoors is the 'correct' place to pee/poop in a humans' eyes, and just leaving her outside won't work. She needs you to be with her, using her 'potty command' and giving instant praise and encouragement when she 'performs'.
Puppies also often need to 'go' more than once during a potty break, especially in the morning or last thing at night.
The key to successful housetraining is containment and supervision... because you need to prevent accidents from happening. I suggest that you use a crate more, and that you supervise her closely whenever she's indoors. Don't let her out of your sight.
If you do the above properly you shouldn't need to have her on a leash indoors, however 'tethering' a pup (having them on a longish training leash attached to your belt) when they're indoors with you is a good bonding tool and does help to prevent this sort of problem. It is something that you could try if you want to.
