Moving 7 month old puppy from kennel to bigger area
Just recently I moved my 7 month old cairn terrier from her kennel to my laundry room to give her more room to play, the area is about 4'x4' now. I would like to gradually give her more and more room until she can have the run of the house when I'm not home.
But, even though I come home at noon and walk her and she has plenty of chew toys to play with, and has been fed, she is tearing up my wall. Eating through the sheet rock! I scolded her the first time and rearranged everything the next day, but she figured out a way to get to the wall again. What am I doing wrong or what should I do differently?
When I'm home she has the run of the house and has never done anything like this before. When I tell her "no" she usually gets it and doesn't do it again. I'm assuming she's bored, shall I kennel her again until she gets a little older? Any advise would be appreciated.
Hi Pam You're not doing anything wrong, and it sounds as though you've done your best to give her toys to entertain her etc., but chances are you're right when you say she's simply bored.
A bored puppy is a destructive puppy, and it's not that she's a BAD girl, it's just a natural canine behavior and JRT's are very active, high-energy dogs so are more likely to get into trouble when left unsupervised. Also, they're 'ratters' and love to dig so digging through your wall is a great game for her and a natural instinct.
Personally I'd just recommend crating her again until she's a bit older and past the biting/chewing phase, hopefully then she will be less inclined to try to dig her way out.
There really isn't any other answer that I can see as it's impossible to stop this sort of behavior when you're not home. If any other visitors have found a great tip that might help Pam, please feel free to share by using the comments feature below.
