is it ok to bring my dog outside to train to go to the bathroom ?
(tippy top of nh)
the question seems silly but i live in northern NH and its very cold here and i own a 16 week old toy maltese
would it be ok to train her on a puppy pad and then in a couple of weeks bring the pad outside so she gets the idea ? or what should i do ?
Hi Andew It can be difficult to housetrain a pup when the weather outside is nasty, especially the smaller breeds as they tend to chill quickly.
However, if at all possible it's best to start training your puppy to eliminate outdoors from the beginning. Using pee pads or a litter tray is tricky at the best of times, and often leads to confusion later on when you try to re-train because it puts in the puppys' mind that it's okay to eliminate indoors.
If you have a fairly sheltered area in your yard that you can keep clear of snow etc., designate that as the potty spot. Fence off, or contain, an area if possible, that way your puppy will likely 'perform' more quickly as there won't be a lot of ground to wander over and so many scents etc. to distract her.
