is it normal for a 5week old staffy to nibble and growl?
hi i have a 5week old A.M staff and my partner is a bit weary of its' behaviour. it had to be taken away from its' mum as she had an infection in her teat so that's why we have it early.
but anyway down to the point.... is it normal for him to nibble bite and growl with a bark? i believe this is perfectly fine as i have had al ot of experience with them but it's just for my partners mind thanks a lot
This puppy is just a very tiny baby, and all his behavior is instinctive at this point. He's lost his momma and litter mates and is simply interacting with you and your partner as if you were his canine family. This is perfectly normal and nothing to worry about.
Puppies that are taken away from their doggie family too early can have nipping issues, and you will need to be sure to correct this tendency. Be gentle about it right now though as he's very, very young. A simple 'no bite' and removing his teeth from you and distracting him with a chew toy is enough. Check out my Puppy Biting page to learn how to handle this as he grows.
The growling and barking is likely just his way of playing with you. As I said earlier, this is how he would behave with his siblings. Once he's over 8 weeks old he'll be more aware of himself and start to make choices, rather than follow instincts. At that point, just make sure that if he ever growls or barks at you to try to resist something you want him to do, or to exert his 'authority' - make sure to correct him so that he knows that you and your partner are 'in charge'.
Staffys are very people-oriented dogs and although they can be a bit stubborn, they are very loving, loyal and obedient. With lots of love and attention, and loving discipline, your pup will do just fine.
He's a cutie - best of luck with him.
