hi, we just adopted a six month old lab mix he barks and growls at my husband. How can we get him to stop.
My husband accidentally spooked him one night and since then he does this. Also when we crate him and leave the house I come home and he is barking, how do I stop him from barking while home alone?
He is fine while we are home and at night.
Hi Maria There are two separate things going on here. I think the barking at your husband is most likely just due to the fact that your pup is a bit anxious and scared of him right now. Directly due to being spooked by him earlier on.
In a new situation and environment like this, that's pretty normal and, as long as nothing happens to reinforce his fears, your pup will get over this given time, love and understanding. He's barking because he's scared, not in an aggressive way, and as he starts to feel more at home and trusts your husband, this behavior will disappear.
The barking in his crate while you are gone is different. In this case, he's showing fairly typical signs of separation anxiety. This is quite common, and often seen in puppies and dogs who are generally a bit anxious or nervous by nature, or going through a stressful time. Again, as your pup starts to feel more comfortable and familiar with his new family and environment, the behavior will likely diminish.
Until then, there are lots of things you can do to help relieve his anxiety and make him less worried and upset when you are gone. Check out my Separation Anxiety In Your Dog page for lots of tips and advice on this, and links to other articles and advice.
I wish you the best of luck with your new puppy, and hope this all settles down soon.
