Getting puppy to sleep
We got a miniture Schnauzer Puppy about two weeks ago, and she's now 10/11 weeks. I think she's been brilliant, very well socialised before we got her, almost toilet trained, already takes herself to the door to go out.
Even at night, once she's down to sleep, she's down... I'm just a little worried about getting her to sleep. We tire her out, then chill with her, we put her in her cage which is were she sleeps, however we then stay with her for, originally 60 minutes, then 30 mins and now 15 mins, she doesn't go to sleep, but she's chilled and happy for us to leave (we leave with a nightlight and quiet radio).
Are we setting ourselves up for a problem by staying with her, or are we doing the right thing by reducing the time we stay with her... Help!!!
It sounds as though you've got the perfect puppy! She's doing amazingly well, but of course she isn't doing it all on her own, you're obviously being amazing puppy parents too :o)
What you're doing with her for bedtime seems to be working really well for her, so I would stick with it. It sounds EXACTLY the way I helped my children learn to go to sleep at night, and I wouldn't necessarily have expected it to work so well with a puppy. But, as the saying goes, 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it'!
As long as you can wean her down to letting you put her in her crate and leave her pretty much right away, it will be fine. If she does make a fuss if you leave he right away you may just have to harden your hearts though.
The radio and light are great, and you've gone a long way towards ensuring that she won't suffer from separation anxiety. I'd say keep up the good work!
