hi,i bought a new doberman 7 days ago. she is 3 months old., but she is very shy and afraid of any sounds. i want to use for my factory guard.
what do you think?
Hi Hamid You've only had your pup for a few days, so it's expected that she may be a bit cautious, but it does also sound as though she's probably not been socialized enough. She may also just be naturally shy.
I'm not exactly sure what you're expecting of this pup, and I personally don't like the idea of a dog being used as a guard dog alone... it's very important for them to be part of a family and get lots of love, attention and socialization even if they are also going to be guardians of home or property.
Especially if she's a big quiet or anxious, she's going to need time to mature and gain in self-confidence in order to be a discerning guard dog and not just react out of fear, or fear-based aggression.
I'd recommend that you check out the pages on my site that deal with socialization (start with Socialize Your Puppy, and also be sure to start basic obedience training with your pup soon.
It's important not to be harsh or use negative methods of training, only use positive rewards-based techniques so that she associates good things with learning. There's tons of information on my site about puppy training too, and I'm sure you'll find them helpful too.
Dobermans are one of the breeds that have natural guardian instincts, but it's important not to encourage those indiscriminately, as this will confuse and frighten the dog. They will develop naturally as she matures, and the best thing you can do is to make sure that she gets enough love and attention, training and socialization, for her to grow into a confident, happy adult dog. That way she will be reliable about protecting you, your family and your property.
